Basscoast was an absolute blast this year! My favorite sets: DJ Cure (not pictured above), DJG, HXDB, Woodhead, Max Ulis, Tal Mala, Jaques Greene, Self Evident. But seriously though, the fest was sooo packed with good talent it often left me feeling torn not able to be at both stages at the same time and still missed some huge sets I'm sure. Already can't wait till next year. I'll also point out this is the first time we've heard our tracks on a system that big to a crowd that size and holy shit, they even played our video at Slay Bay! Man, I live 20 minutes from Shambhala and didn't even go.. completely satisfied from the weekend before.

Special interview with none other than Cedaa!

What kind of music do you do?

Tough question. I like to think my music pulls from some of my favorite musical styles (house, juke, hip hop) while giving off a unique kind of spiritual or hypnotic feel. Others have described my track as "syrupy" and "hypermelodic", which are tags i agree with to some extent. Actually, if I had to choose 3 words to describe my music with at the moment, "syrupy", "hyper" and "melodic" would do a pretty decent job.

Where are ya from?

I was born in Port Townsend, WA and lived there for a day before moving to Seattle. I moved to Mercer Island when I was 5 and stayed there for most of my adolescence. Currently I'm living in Bellingham, WA attending college.

What are ur current influences, past musical tastes?

House, Juke, Hip Hop, RnB all influence my music. I pull a lot of my percussion arrangements from rudiments and cadences my drumline played in highschool. I wrote a song a while back that is essentially a note for note copy of my favorite cadence we played, "roller". I'd like to polish it up and release it at some point. Brings back a lot of good memories.

So how did a young dood from mercer island find his way into Ghetto'd out footwork shit?

I listened to a lot of hip hop in my early teens and transitioned to dance music a couple years after. A good friend of mine, Jeremy, played a couple juke mixtapes for me in 2008 and I fell in love. I had never heard hip hop and dance music blended in such a raw way. Songs from my childhood were chopped, pitched and repeated in such a unique way that gives them new feeling and meaning. The perfect blend of nostalgia and novelty.

How do you feel about the Seattle scene?

The scene is small but growing! There are some really talented and genuinely nice people involved in releasing "bass" music and putting on shows in Seattle. Ill Cosby and everyone involved with Carcrashset are an obvious mention. Quality releases month after month and one of the most eclectic catalogs I've ever seen sets them above the pack in my eyes.

Local Djs and producers like Astronomar, DJ Darwin and Dash EXP continue to hold things down. Kid Simpl has been making some waves online recently as well. Young-ins unite! Everyone who is involved in putting on the Decibel festival is also doing heaps for the Seattle scene as well, namely Sean Horton and Amy Polansky.

I recently contributed 4 songs to the "No Northwest" C/C/S compilation (along with 4 each from fellow seattle producers 214, qp and Ill Cosby himself) that will be released on May 17th. Hopefully it will shine the spotlight on the seattle scene a little :)

Do you ever come up to Vancouver?

I haven't been in several years, but I'm coming to play on June 25th w/ Self Evident and HxdB! I plan on making more trips in the future. My passport was lost for a bit.

What would you say ur spin on music is?

I bring the Hood Drama.

I notice you like to switch up bpms a lot. What are your favorite BPMs from a producing / DJ standpoint?

Right now I always end up producing songs around either 130 or 160. I experiment with different tempos and styles but usually end up coming back to those bpms. 130/160 are common in my dj sets as well, but I like to switch tempos fairly often. It keeps the crowd more interested/engaged I think.

Do your freinds feel your music, do the locals get it or do you find more love elsewhere?

My close friends in Bellingham enjoy my music. Overall, it's not all that well known in the area though. Probably better known elsewhere. My roommate and I threw a party last month at a bar downtown that went pretty well though. It's exciting to know that people are interested in coming and dancing at an event like that. We're doing another once called "Good Looks" at the Wild Buffalo on May 19th. Come out if you're in in the area :)

What are you studying at university?

Cultural Anthroplogy.

So let me get this straight, you're an established producer, you attend university and work, oh and you're 20, how is this possible?

I don't do any of them all that well lol

Where are you most looking forward to travelling?

The South, Europe, Mexico!!

Any touring plans coming up?

I"m planning a trip to LA in mid-late June to play some shows and visit some friends. I'm still looking to book some more dates so promoters hit me up! Looking to come out to the east coast in late summer/early fall as well. I'll be updating dates on my tumblr and Facebook periodically.

What's your favorite dessert?

What Kinda Music do you do?

Hilti:

Juke, Ghettotech, House, Hip Hop... Ghettobass music

Philthkids:

Being from France, how did you get into Juke/Ghettotech, is there a scene out there for that kind of music?

Hilti:

I discovered Juke music in 1998 through my local vinylshop who was already into Ghettohouse & Ghettotech since a while, then I continued to digg House & HipHop tracks but I was definitely sure that it was exactly my fav electronic music scene. I started my first mixes & demos... Memories lol!

In France there is a scene since many years, it started with Dirty Musik (label, djs/producers collectiv & party promoters), Jess & Crabbe, Goon & Koyotte & some other guys based essentially @ Paris, we were a few ones like me living in others lil towns but no real local scene (just my lab & me mofo! haha)
Now there is a bigger scene with more djs/producers & with different labels & different idendtities, sounds good for the future French scene : B.YRSLF division, Booty Call records, Snap records, Bros Before Hoes, etc...

Which Ghetto/Booty/Juke artists doing it there over the years?

Dunno really, but i never thought about it, but I think they are into it since 2009/2010

What European artists do you roll with? Ever play a show with Non Stop DJs?

Hilti:
No I never played a show with a Non Stop dj, in europe I work with Jess & Crabbe,

In my opinion, Ghettotech is at a very interesting time, a massive rebirth and renewel, do you feel the same way?

Hilti:
Hell yeah exactly my opinion, it's a very exciting era, a new one, as always some dudes are excited, some others hate this evolution(s) & some others still trying to understand what's happened (I think I'm in the first & third cases loll)

Have you ever been to Canada?

Hilti:
No, just through Roi Heenok, Terence & Philip, Celine Dion lolll just kidding, unfortunately I've never been to Canada but why not one day!

What can we expect to hear from you in the future?

Gonna keep this brief like my boxers.. Producer of the Year 2010 goes to Club Cheval's Canblaster. Refreshingly original, his ingenuity lies in the ability to somehow make things work that have no business working together at all (i.e. remix of DTL's "Hot as Hell"). Every tune vibrantly different from the next, this a fresh insight into what 2011 has to offer. Kinda wish we actually had an award to give out, as we have nothing, nothing at all.
